Frequently Asked Questions

WILL WE HAVE A SIXTH FORM TASTER DAY?

Yes - we run a Post 16 Experience Day for our Year 10 students in the summer term.  This gives students the chance to experience life in Sixth Form.  This includes a taste of Sixth Form lessons in subjects delivered by both Sherburn High and Tadcaster Grammar staff,  You will also be able to take part in our careers event, learn about apprenticeships and speak to Universities.

WHAT IS THE UNIFORM POLICY IN SIXTH FORM?

Our uniform policy for Sixth Form recognises that self-expression and individuality is an important part of becoming an adult. Students are expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate for a site which is directly linked to accommodation for younger students and is suitable for a working environment.

CAN I USE MY MOBILE PHONE IN SIXTH FORM?

Yes - whilst you're in the Sixth Form block you can use your mobile phone as much as you like. However, mobile phones are not allowed whilst you move around the rest of the site or in lessons - if you use it outside of the Sixth Form block, you lose it!

Sixth Form students are allowed to use their mobile phones in the Sixth Form area.  Mobile phones and any accessories must be out of sight and switched off in all other areas of the school.  We expect students to use their mobile phones in a responsible manner in the way they would be expected to in a working environment.

I'VE HEARD THAT THERE'S A POOL TABLE, VENDING MACHINES, A TV, SOUND BAR AND A KITCHEN WITH A COFFEE MACHINE IN SIXTH FORM - IS THAT RIGHT?

That is absolutely right. We have fantastic facilities in our Sixth Form which we look after really carefully so that others can enjoy them too. The pool table costs 50p a game, and there are cues for you to use and plenty of chalk. We have two vending machines with drinks and snacks in them, a TV and sound bar plus a kitchen where you can use the kettle and microwave as you wish to - we really try to look after you. In addition to this, we have three designated Sixth Form study rooms that you can use. All of them have computers. We also have a wealth of games but the real competition takes place at the chess table!

IF I START A COURSE AND I WANT TO CHANGE, WHAT DO I DO?

When you select your initial option choices for September, we'd always recommend taking more than three subjects if you're unsure about what you might study. At the end of September, we have our "Transfer Window" where you can change your subjects should you wish to. After that point, we don't allow students to switch between courses as commitment is key to be successful at A-level.

WHAT DOES TUTORIAL LOOK LIKE IN SIXTH FORM?

We've got a fantastic tutorial programme in our Sixth Form. We like to get external speakers in as much as possible to talk to you - it's loads better to have experts in their field sharing their passion and knowledge! Last year, we worked with people like Heineken, YorSexual Health, Open Minds, Jet2, Alcoholics Anonymous just to name a few. We've also designed the rest of the tutorial programme to be challenging and thought provoking too, meaning that you will leave us being more knowledgeable about a whole host of different issues - not just your A-levels!  We work your tutorial sessions around your timetables as we know it is important for you to have autonomy whilst also receiving first class guidance from your tutor team.

IF I CHOOSE TO TAKE COURSES AT TADCASTER GRAMMAR SCHOOL, HOW DOES THIS WORK?

We're really proud of our collaboration with Tadcaster Grammar School, and many of you will take subjects there as part of your studies. There is a free shuttle bus which takes you to and from the two sites for either morning or afternoon sessions. Whilst you're over there, you'll be taught by subject specialists and, like at Sherburn, you can use all their facilities and get to know new people. Our students talk really positively about their experiences over there and it’s always great to see you widen your friendship network.
