Year 9 GCSE Textiles students are working on a collaborative community project with Peter Pan Nursery. They will be designing and making story bags for the children at the nursery to enhance their learning experience.
Peter Pan Nursery specialises in care for children with additional needs, disabilities, illness, learning difficulties and behavioural issues, they also support children whose families are experiencing difficulties or are in need of respite and support.
The students received a visit from Melanie the Nursery Manager to learn about the nursery and share existing story bags and discuss their design ideas. Each student will be making a story bag based on a different children's story. The textiles class learnt how powerful, engaging and inclusive story telling can be with the aid of story sacks and additional props which help all the children to be involved and included in the story.
Lorna Fassnidge, Curriculum Leader for Creative Arts said "Sherburn High School is at the heart of its community. Collaborative projects are really important to raise the student's social awareness and consideration of the needs of other members in their local community. This challenging project combines creativity and an awareness of the importance of reading and storytelling. The students are really excited to be working to a 'live' brief with a real client."
